Urban Juke Joint / Poetry Open Mic

A Nobler Expression”

Founded in August 2006, the Urban Juke Joint is a monthly open mic that provides a safe place for ongoing creative expression of poetry, spoken word, rhymes, beats, and other artistic forms both on an individual and a community level. UJJ seeks to promote the growth and development of a culture of learning and appreciation of "other" poetic forms outside the normal scope of the average young urban reader and writer. It strives to foster an atmosphere of fellowship for individuals of diverse backgrounds and ages as well as disciplines. Participants, whether seasoned readers and writers or novices new to the art, are encouraged to not just read their work from an entertainment perspective but to “offer” their work in order that it may inspire a personal connection with the heart and soul of every listener. At the core of every open mic is the “Community Discussion”. UJJ invites the audience to engage in a dialogue on topics affecting the individual, the institution and the community not just from a social standpoint but also on a spiritual level. It is hoped that through this cross-cultural, cross-generational interaction, social intercourse and influence, artists will gain a greater understanding, directly and indirectly, of aesthetics and the social-political-spiritual responsibility associated with the craft of writing.

The Urban Juke Joint open mic occurs every last Friday of the month at the Baha’i Unity Center near Union Square. Housed in a place of worship, artists and guests are humbly asked to refrain from the use of any profanity or explicit material in their work. UJJ envisions in every artist “a nobler expression” and makes every effort to provide an atmosphere where this expression can take root and its greatest capacity comes forth to fruition.

One of the names of God is the Fashioner. He loveth craftsmanship….the true worth of artists and craftsmen should be appreciated, for they advance the affairs of mankind”.
